Copy is a new service owned by networking and storage company Barracuda Networks. It has plenty of features in terms of functionality and storage that users get when they sign up for the service.
New users receive 5 Gigabyte of free space in storage in the cloud, now, this may not sound too impressive at first, but Copy is currently running a promotion that uses a reference system to reward users with 5 additional Gigabytes of storage for each user that signs up for the service.
Thus, for 50 Gigabytes of free storage, users need to invite friends to the service. And yes, you get an additional five Gigabytes if you are referred by someone. You can catch another 2 Gigabytes if you tweet about the service as well.
Barracuda Payment Plans
Users who need more immediate space can subscribe to one of two payment plans. Barracuda is offering 250 Gigabytes of space for $9.99 a month or $99 per year and 500 Gigabytes of space for $14.99 or $149 per year.
Barracuda Price Comparison
To put things in perspective, Dropbox users pay $9.99 per month or $99 per year per 100 Gigabytes of extra storage, users of SkyDrive pay $50 per year per 100 Gigabytes of storage and Google Drive users pay $9.99 for 200 Gigabyte per month.
Barracuda is Available On Many Devices
Barracuda Copy is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux desktop systems, Android and iOS platform, and as a web-based version. The desktop version installs a service root folder on the system that is used to automatically transfer files from within the folder of the cloud and from the cloud back to the computer.
Sharing Files With Barracuda
The files within the folder can be shared with a right click on the file that you want to share. Just copy actions from the context menu and then send or copy the public link option from the menu. This will send your files to the person you want to see them.
Share Exclusive Links
Instead of sharing files by creating public links to them, which allows anyone with the link to access them, you can also share links only with other service members so that they are the only ones who can only access the files you want share.
Take Control of Your Share Settings
You can also share folders with other users of the service. Regarding sharing options, you can choose read only actions for invited users without including the ability to change, sync or edit files, or let people synchronize and edit files as well.
Copy supports fast synchronization from the local network, although this is not really explained anywhere in the site or in the configuration. It is very likely that the contents are synchronized directly between devices connected to the same local network.
Storing Files In the Cloud
What does not seem possible at this time is the ability to select specific files or folders to synchronize with LAN only. All files appear to be stored in the cloud regardless of the property. This is still a very helpful feature though.
Limiting Your Bandwidth
Still, it’s good to have this feature as you’ll save bandwidth if you use it on multiple devices connected to the same local area network. You also have another interesting option in the preferences section. You can limit the bandwidth for loading or unloading with the service.
All Information Is Encrypted
Files are transferred using SSL and according to the support staff, your information is also encrypted on its servers. Copy also supports data deduplication and a historical archive. Copy is definitely a good a option for anyone looking for a network with a reliable backup.
